About Yaupon

What is yaupon tea?

Yaupon holly (pronounced "YO-pawn") is the only caffeinated plant native to North America. It grows naturally across the southeastern United States, from Texas over to Florida and up to the Carolinas. Indigenous peoples brewed yaupon for centuries before European colonization. The leaves are harvested, roasted at different levels, and brewed like tea.

Yaupon is a botanical cousin of South American yerba mate and guayusa; all three are members of the holly family, but yaupon is the only one that grows natively in what is now the United States. Unlike yerba mate, yaupon also contains theacrine, a rare compound that complements caffeine for smoother, longer-lasting energy. And unlike traditional tea from Camellia sinensis, yaupon is low in teeth-staining tannins, leading to a naturally gentler and smoother sip.

Hang on, the Latin name is Ilex vomitoria. Will yaupon make me throw up?

No, yaupon does not cause vomiting. The misleading name comes from Royal Botanist William Aiton, who in 1789 named the plant based on misinterpreted European accounts of an Indigenous purification ceremony. The vomiting observed by European colonists was likely a result of the ceremonial context itself, which involved consuming extremely large quantities while fasting, sometimes mixed with other plants.

Yaupon, consumed normally, doesn’t make you throw up, and modern research confirms that yaupon leaves contain no emetic compounds. In fact, yaupon's low tannin content makes it easier on digestion than most traditional teas.

What does yaupon tea taste like?

Yaupon has a clean, smooth flavor that varies depending on the roast level. We offer three flavors of our organic yaupon, each roasted to bring out a different side of the plant:

  • Original: Bright and crisp. Floral and airy up front, with a soft sweetness and a clean, light finish. Great on its own, or paired with a touch of honey and a squeeze of lemon.
  • Bold: Rich and toasted. Opens with a rich nuttiness that deepens into a dark, smoky center and a comforting finish. Tastes great straight up and also stands up well with your sweetener of choice.
  • Mellow: Malted and earthy. Woody and easy on the palate, with a grain-forward body and a subtle, lingering natural sweetness. Our most versatile brew.

Because yaupon is low in tannins, it means less bitterness in your beverage, even if you steep longer than intended.

How much caffeine is in Goldholly yaupon tea?

Each teabag contains about 30mg of caffeine. That’s roughly half the amount of caffeine in green or black tea, and about a quarter of what’s in a cup of coffee. You can adjust your intake by using more teabags per cup:

  • 1 teabag = Improved focus (about 30mg caffeine)
  • 2 teabags = All-day energy (about 60mg caffeine)
  • 3 teabags = Peak performance (about 90mg caffeine)

Lighter roasts contain slightly more caffeine than darker roasts, since the roasting process breaks down a small amount of caffeine. However, the difference between flavors is minor. We go deeper into yaupon's caffeine content and how it compares across beverages in our caffeine guide.

Does yaupon have more or less caffeine than coffee?

Less, unless you stack teabags. A standard cup of coffee contains about 95 to 100mg of caffeine, while one Goldholly teabag contains about 30mg.

The advantage of yaupon is not raw caffeine volume, but rather the quality of the energy: yaupon contains theobromine and theacrine alongside caffeine, which work together for a smoother, longer-lasting lift without the jitter-crash cycle.

What are theobromine and theacrine, and why are they in yaupon?

Theobromine and theacrine are naturally occurring compounds in yaupon that complement caffeine. Theacrine is structurally similar to caffeine; studies on the molecule suggest that it can support mental clarity, improved mood, and sustained focus. Research also suggests that theacrine doesn’t disrupt sleep the way caffeine can, and that the body doesn’t build a tolerance to it as quickly. Theobromine, also found in cacao, provides a balanced, joyful energy boost.

Together, the three compounds create a balanced energy profile that feels different from coffee or tea.

Brewing & Enjoying

How do I brew Goldholly yaupon tea?

To brew Goldholly, simply heat water to 180 to 195°F, pour over your teabag(s), and steep for 6 to 7 minutes. Use the same temperature for all three flavors.Since it has low tannin content, yaupon is more forgiving than coffee and many teas when it's steeped for longer.

You can also brew hot and refrigerate for a richer iced yaupon, since hot water extracts more caffeine and flavor than cold water does. For cold brew, steep 2 or more teabags in cold water for 12 to 24 hours for a particularly smooth, clean result.

You can drink it hot, pour it over ice, or try one of our recipes.

Which flavor should I start with?

It depends on what you already drink. If you drink green tea or prefer lighter flavors, start with Original. If you like black tea or want something balanced, go with Mellow. If you drink coffee or like bold, roasted flavors, try Bold. Not sure? Our Variety Bundle includes all three so you can find your favorite.

Health & Wellness

Is yaupon safe to drink every day?

Yes. Yaupon has been consumed safely for centuries, and its moderate caffeine content of about 30mg per teabag is well within commonly recommended daily caffeine limits. Many yaupon drinkers find that the low tannin content also means a smoother sip than coffee or traditional tea.

If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your healthcare provider, as yaupon does contain caffeine.

Does yaupon contain antioxidants?

Yes. Yaupon naturally contains a diverse profile of polyphenolic antioxidants, including chlorogenic acids (which make up about 70% of yaupon's total polyphenolics), quercetin, and rutin. These compounds have been studied for their ability to neutralize free radicals, reduce inflammation, and support cardiovascular function. Notably, yaupon's antioxidants are more stable during storage than those found in green tea, which means they retain their potency longer.

Is yaupon tea good for gut health?

Yaupon's polyphenols can function as prebiotics, which means they feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. These compounds, primarily chlorogenic acids, are not fully digested in the small intestine, so they reach the colon where gut bacteria can metabolize them into short-chain fatty acids that support intestinal health. Yaupon's low tannin content is also relevant here: tannins in coffee and traditional tea can irritate sensitive stomachs, while yaupon is gentle enough to drink on an empty stomach or throughout the day.
